The dead girl’s birthday fell on April 26th, the day before, providing an opportunity to bring it up all over again, to remind the electorate about Amy Biehl the dedicated white activist murdered by the Pan Africanist Students’ Organization, while the voting was going on. The CIA wanted the people, 17 million of whom were black Africans voting for the first time, to give a mandate to Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress, presented as the peace candidates (despite their own extensive history of violence).
